At this joint research conference of the Universities of Tilburg, NL, and Vancouver, British Columbia, CA, Talking Hope founder Eva-Maria McCormack calls for a new social contract rooted in sustainability and social inclusion. In her talk, she argues that effective climate communication must go beyond “climate” alone and speak to the lived realities of people navigating inequality, insecurity and polycrisis. Hopeful, empowering visions of the future can turn climate hope into a catalyst for engagement and change.

At Tropentag 2023, we challenge the crisis-driven climate narrative and argue for a more hopeful, human-centred approach. Our presentation shows how framing climate action through inclusion, social justice and shared opportunity can strengthen participation and build broader support for change. Climate communication is most powerful when it invites people not just to prevent loss, but to imagine and shape a more just and liveable future.
